Sunderland boss Melanie Reay and Southampton Women’s manager Aaron Smith have been named FA Women’s National League Managers of the Month, in their respective divisions, for January.
Second time around for Reay
Melanie Reay has been named FAWNL Premier Division Manager of the Month for the second time this season.
Reay’s Sunderland have enjoyed a perfect start to the decade after picking up three wins from three during January [adding a fourth win in February] to take them six points clear at the top of the FA WNL Northern Premier Division and progress to the Fifth Round of the FA Cup.
The Lasses began the year with a comfortable 1-4 win against Fylde in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup, before beating the The Coasters again the following week in league action.
Their third win of the month proved to be the most impressive as they beat the [then] FAWNL Southern Premier league leaders Watford 2-0, ending The Golden Girls’ ten-game winning streak, to progress to the Fifth Round of the FA Cup where they drawn against FA Women’s Super League strugglers Birmingham City.

Smith picks up award
Southampton Women’s manager Aaron Smith has been named the FAWNL Division One Manager of the Month for January.
It was a perfect month for Smith, who guided Southampton Women’s to two wins from two during January, to move within two points of league leaders, and local rivals, Southampton FC and progress to the Fourth Round of the FA Cup.
The Hampshire side started the new decade in the same manner as the finished the last, by knocking out higher-ranked opposition in the FA Cup and picking up three points in the league.
A Jane Yeates goal Erin Bloomfield brace helped Southampton progress to the Fourth Round, knocking out a Tier 3 side West Bromwich Albion in the process, followed by a 2-1 win against Brislington in the league.
